Item name:Daggers from River Ljubljanica at Blatna Brezovica
Dating:16th–13th century BC
Material:Bronze
Findspot:River Ljubljanica at Blatna Brezovica
On display:The Earliest Stories from the Crossroads
Description
The three bronze daggers were found in the
River Ljubljanica at Blatna
Brezovica. As with swords
(Figs. 226, 230), the bronze
daggers also developed from
those with a handguard plate in the Middle
Bronze Age (bottom) to the flange-hilted examples in the Late Bronze Age (top). The dagger with a
trapezoid handguard plate is a rare find in Slovenia. Similar examples were common goods in the graves of men of
the central European Tumulus culture, in the 16th and 15th centuries
(cf. chapter on Tumuli, memorials of the ancestors). The flange-hilted
daggers with a split pommel have close parallels in the numerous daggers
offered into the River Mincio, where it flows from Lake Garda; these daggers date
to the transition from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age (14th–13th centuries BC).
