Remains
of a typical early medieval site in the Gorenjska region have been investigated
at the village of Smokuč. It was a burial site in use for over two hundred
years (at least from the late 8th to the late 10th century). The cemetery
revealed items characteristic of the eastern Alpine area. Its early period is
marked by objects of thin bronze wire and sheet bronze (late 8th and 9th
centuries), the later period by cast and enamel-decorated objects (10th
century). A special find is a group of graves from around 800 that contained
pots with provisions and hens. The graves with animal bone remains also
revealed a battle knife and a necklace with oriental glass beads.
