Forms for a New Democracy

Fabiani – Plečnik – Vurnik

16 December, 2021 – 8 May, 2022, Muzejska

There is no culture without people, and no architecture without culture.

“Forms for a new democracy” is based on the idea that architecture helps create our identity, shaping the underlying character of society and the messages it conveys.

Through his lavish visual language, Plečnik was able to combine the heritage of the ancient cultures, the Classical period, Central European tradition and Slovenian cultural practices. Fabiani deliberately distanced himself from histori(ci)sm in later life, seeking instead a contemporary architectural language, while Vurnik consciously set out to create a Slovenian national style. Despite the differences between them, they all strove to create democratically designed spaces and the best possible architectural and urban-planning solutions. In this way, “forms” unite with “democracy” to create a sustainable architectural heritage.

This book therefore sets out to present the inspiring and visually enchanting birth of Slovenia’s contemporary architecture and its future-oriented mission.
