Dr. Daša Pavlovič, univ. dipl. Arhaeologist, Senior Curator, Research Associate

Born 8. 9. 1979 in Ljubljana.

BA in Archaeology on the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana in 2007. Title of Diploma thesis: Grofove njive pri Drnovem. Halštatskodobna naselbina in gomila (Grofove njive by Drnovo, Hallstatt-period Settlement and Tumulus), Mentor: akad. red. prof. dr. Biba Teržan.  

PhD thesis titled Early Medieval Settlement in North-eastern Slovenia. A Case Study: Nova tabla by Murska Sobota; Mentor: prof. ddr. Mitja Guštin on the Department of Archaeology, University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities in 2013.

Work positions

  • 2020 - present: Senior Curator for Early Middle Ages in the National Museum of Slovenia.
  • 2016 - 2020: Curator for Early Middle Ages in the National Museum of Slovenia.
  • 2015 - 2016: Research Assistant, working on the research programme Mobile Cultural Heritage: Archaeological and Archaeometric Research in the National museum of Slovenia.
  • 2007 – 2013: Pedagogic Assistant on the Department of Archaeology, University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities on the subject of Underwater Archaeology.
  • 2007 – 2012: Young Researcher at the Institute of Mediterranean Heritage, University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities.
  • 2000 – 2007: Working in Archaeological Excavations in Slovenia and abroad (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt).

Museum Work

As a Senior Curator, she takes care of the collections of late antiquity and early medieval periods. Through the scientific study of the collections, she helps to contribute to a better understanding of the period between the 5th and 11th centuries. She in presenting the results to a wider interested public, students and experts through presentations, lectures and publications. As a Curator, she participated in more than ten exhibitions of the National Museum of Slovenia. Among the more important ones were the Gold of the Chinese Emperors exhibition opened in 2018, where she was the author of the exhibition and editor of the catalogue, and the exhibition Sharing a Common Future: Exhibition of Treasures from National Museums along the Silk Road at the National Museum in Beijing in 2019.

  • Across the Lombards’ Lands A.L.L. (1.7.2016 – 31.12.2017) (Grant Agreement: 699425-A.L.L.-COS-TOUR-2015-3-04/COS-TOUR-2015-3-04-1); Leader of the project group from the National museum of Slovenia.

Research and Pedagogical work

As an author or co-author, she publishes scientific studies in the field of archeology of the early Middle Ages, specializing mainly in the material culture of lowland settlements of the 6th to 9th centuries, in which ceramics finds dominate. She regularly participates in international scientific symposia or congresses. Since 2015, she is a Research Associate on the research program Movable cultural heritage: archaeological and archaeometric research at the Archaeological Department of the National Museum of Slovenia. Since 2015, she regularly cooperates with the Department of Archeology of the University of Ljubljana in the course Early Medieval Archaeology. She prepares occasional lectures and guides students through the collections of the National Museum of Slovenia and prepares workshops for students, where they get additional knowledge about the material culture of the early Middle Ages. Between 2008-2013, she was a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska in the subject Underwater Archeology.
